The COLSAC Film Program serves as a self-regenerating revenue entity for the The Coelman and Smith Artistic Company. The program is divided into three components: 1) the taping of COLSAC Theatre stage plays 2) film production workshops 3) film production boot camps.
Step1: COLSAC Touring stage plays will be videotaped and sold to talent and audiences immediately following the performances. The sale of all videotapes and DVDs will act as a revenue source for producing the short films in step 3.
*(Note: There are roughly six plays waiting to be edited which will be added to the inventory of productions to be sold on an ongoing basis.)
Step2: COLSAC Film Production Workshops and Yo Thang will allow current members the opportunity to learn the art and craft of filmmaking from both the above and below-the-line perspectives of: directing, producing, lighting, sound mixing, gripping, gaffing, etc. The workshops will be conducted by current COLSAC instructors and visiting professionals.
Step3: COLSAC Guerilla Film Boot camps will take place throughout the year on a quarterly basis. Each quarter starting in Janaury, approximately 15 film makers who have completed a film Production can submit short scripts, 25 pages or less, to be shot in a digital video format. The our judges will vote on the eight best scripts. Any aspiring director from the group must independently direct a scene from his favorite script of the 8. Any aspiring director of photography must present a visual representation of how he would light a given scene from one of the eight scripts. Producers must draft an estimated budget, possible casting decisions, locations etc. Again, the entire group votes on the four best presentations. The finalists in each category will participate in the given position for one of the four short films to be shot over the course of the next year. For example, an individual may direct the first short, but DP the second short, produce the third and act in the fourth. This process allows each member to be completely immersed in the filmmaking process over the course if his enrollment in the program.
